I've just started writing a story about a florist who specializes in the language of flowers and starts getting orders with threatening messages for one of her best clients. With the help of her handsome new neighbor she must find out whose sending the threats because the client as gone missing and the police are looking at her.
Now the reason I bring this up other then wanted you to want the story when I'm done with it. Is I have been researching flower meanings for the story and wow are there some doozies out there. There is a huge range of means like Arbutus means You're the only one I love while Asphodel means My regrets follow you to the grave some as simple as a Begonia means Beware and a Bellflower Disappointment. It's Shocking how sinister some of the simplest flowers can be in the right or wrong context. Some a very specific in what they mean like A striped carnation means rejection or a red Chrysanthemum means I love you.And others have many meanings that need other flowers their context to be clear like Columbine can be the symbol of a deceived lover, or mean ingratitude or faithlessness where a Gardenia can mean You're lovely, secret love, joy, sweet love or even just good luck. So maybe next time you get a bouquet you should look for the hidden meaning or better yet look into it before you send your sweetie a bunch? |
